My sister gave me Mary Bauer’s book, Minnesota Day Trips by Theme for my birthday this year. Day trips are a fun idea made smarter by the Covid-19 pandemic that has most of us working on staycations for now. The state I live in is blessed with a solid four seasons that bring change and beauty throughout the year. The state tag line is Land of 10,000 lakes, which doesn’t include the many rivers (Minnesota includes the headwaters for the mighty Mississippi) or Lake Superior, which borders Minnesota for about 220 miles in the Northeast.
I’ve been a model railroad fan for a long time so I thought it was only appropriate that I start with the section titled “Trains, Trains, and More Trains.” As with most of the United States, most of the passenger trains have disappeared due to American’s love of the automobile, but there are reminders in the Twin Cities. The Union Depot in St. Paul is one great reminder at our fingertips. It was recently restored, renovated, and updated as a hub for the Light Rail transit system and on a pretty day makes a great afternoon visit.
The author also mentions a few other places around the Twin Cities and the state that are worth the effort to see, but I’ll let you check those out for yourself.
Happy day tripping and stay safe and healthy out there!
